HYS: Should Lloris have been stripped of captaincy?

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a turbulent few weeks, losing for the first time this season prior to the international break against Marco Silva’s Watford.

The Lilywhites also caught the headlines for the wrong reasons through captain Hugo Lloris, who was charged with drink driving and this week admitted to being more than twice over the limit.

World Cup winner Lloris was subsequently handed a 20 month ban from driving and charged £50,000 but escaped punishment from Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who elected not to strip the 31-year-old of the club captaincy.

That decision has sparked debate as many believe he should not retain his position following the incident and believe it sends the wrong message, though Pochettino believes the experienced stopper has learnt his lesson already.

It all comes at a difficult time for Spurs as they have experienced a delay in their stadium move and entered the campaign without a single signing, although retaining Lloris as their captain was always going to be a move that attracted criticism – but the decision made by the club is ultimately the right one.
