The future of Mousa Dembele remains unresolved, but as the days go by, it seems more likely that the midfielder will leave Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgian has just one year left on his contract, so it makes financial sense for the North London outfit to sell now before allowing him to leave for nothing in a year's time.

If Dembele does depart, Tottenham need to find a replacement, and if they want the cheap option then William Carvalho should be under consideration.

It would be a coup for Spurs if they manage to win the midfielder's signature as they would scoop him on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old, who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, has had his contract at Sporting Lisbon terminated on request due to the May attack on the players from 50 masked fans.

The Portugal international can play as a deep-lying midfielder, but he can also feature centrally, as well as in defence.

That kind of versatility could suit Mauricio Pochettino's side, and Carvalho's style would certainly fit into the Premier League.

With that in mind, should Tottenham join the scramble for his signature?
