Tottenham Hotspur fell victim to one of the worst refereeing decisions you’re ever likely to see. Jan Vertonghen was judged to be offside, and stopped running through direct on goal, when five yards inside his own half and clearly in front of the last defender.
The Belgian international gave Spurs the lead with a deflected shot in just the third minute but Tottenham were pegged back thanks to a Sebastian Larsson free-kick. The free-kick was won by former Spurs striker Defoe, who was making his debut after signing from Toronto FC for Sunderland on Friday.
Christian Eriksen’s swept home Andros Townsend’s square pass late on to keep up Spurs’s push for the top four. Harry Kane also hit the post for Tottenham, who are making the ‘2-1’ win something of a habit this season.
