Tottenham are making the most out of the January transfer window and having added a midfielder in Gedson Fernandes they have now reportedly set their sights on improving the right-back area.

El Desmarque report that Jose Mourinho is interested in compatriot Joao Cancelo of Manchester City, who joined the Citizens last summer for £27.5m, with Danilo heading the other way to Juventus.

Right-back is an area Spurs are short on with Mourinho relying on Serge Aurier to play there in every match but two since he has taken over, but the Ivory Coast international has come under significant criticism at times this season and can certainly be upgraded upon.

Cancelo hasn't had the game time he probably would have wanted since his switch to England so it is interesting to see if he would be keen on a move, as El Desmarque suggest he is unhappy.

Many Spurs fans are very excited at the transfer news and would jump at the chance to sign him, having been impressed with what he has shown in his 18 City appearances.

However, a WhoScored rating of 7.00 for all competitions compared to Aurier's 7.28 suggests he may not be an improvement on the 27-year-old, and given the fee it may take to prise him away it may not be a deal worth pursuing, with the 25-year-old rated at £45m by Transfermarkt.

Some supporters would rather Spurs focus on a different Man City right-back, Kyle Walker, having seen him make the move to Eastlands from Tottenham in 2017.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 - how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

The England international is still first-choice under Pep Guardiola having played 23 times this season, however, and therefore the likelihood of him returning is perhaps even more unlikely than the Portugal international coming to North London.

In other transfer news, Spurs fans have also taken delight in a recent development which could signal a positive step forward for the club.
