Real Betis star Giovani Lo Celso is attempting to push through a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per the Daily Mirror.

What’s the word?

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is attempting to restructure his playing squad after the club reached the Champions League final and finished fourth in the Premier League.

Lo Celso has emerged as a major target and the report claims that the former PSG attacking midfielder’s representatives are confident that a deal will be reached for a fee of £70m.

He scored 16 goals in 2018-19, while laying on six assists, and has a release clause of £88m.

Spurs, the Mirror claim, have thus far made a bid worth £62m - £50m with £12m in bonuses – and the Spanish club are aware that Lo Celso wants the move.

The 23-year-old is keen to work under Pochettino and a deal would see Spurs smash their current transfer record, which stands at the £42m they paid to acquire Davinson Sanchez from Ajax.

Nomadic spell

If this deal comes off it’ll be Lo Celso’s third permanent transfer in four years.

He agreed a deal to join PSG from Rosario Central in 2016 and linked up with the French club the following year after being loaned back to the Argentine side.

The midfielder made a total of 54 appearances for the Ligue 1 side and was loaned to Betis, who exercised a clause to sign him permanently in April.

They paid a reported €22m (£19.4m) and are now set to turn a massive profit on a player who has thrived in La Liga.

But there should be concerns for Spurs. Rosario and PSG were both willing to cash in and now it appears that Betis’ stance is softening.

Pochettino may have identified him as a primary target but, really, he ought to think twice; how long will it be before the midfielder gets bored and seeks another move?
