Marcus Rashford fails to break Wayne Rooney’s record in Tottenham clash

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford failed to break Wayne Rooney’s long-standing record of scoring the most goals in the Premier League as a teenager after he drew a blank in the 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The attacker, who turns 20 years of age on Tuesday, was chasing his former teammate’s record of 15 English top flight goals before his 20th birthday that Rooney achieved in 2005, with Rashford on 13 coming into the clash against Spurs.

The England international knew that he needed to score a brace to equal the tally, or a hat-trick to beat it, but despite being named in the starting line-up he couldn’t find the back of the net before he was replaced by eventual match-winner Anthony Martial in the 70th minute.

Rooney went on to score 253 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils before departing for Everton during the summer transfer window, and if Rashford remains at the club for the foreseeable future he will hope to try and beat that number – currently with 26 he certainly has a long way to go!
