According to L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain have lined up Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino as possible replacements for Unai Emery.

What's the story?

Unai Emery has PSG flying at the top of Ligue 1, but as for any manager that takes over at PSG these days, it’s Champions League or bust.

The French giants’ exit from the competition has led to plenty of speculation about Emery being dismissed at the end of the season, and L’Equipe reports that Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino are top of the list for replacements.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has supposedly been monitoring Pochettino for some time. He hopes to use the good relations between the clubs left over from the deals for Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura to forge a deal.

No official steps have been taken, but it’s claimed that Pini Zahavi, who worked on the Neymar deal, has a good relationship with Daniel Levy.

Who should get the job?

The PSG manager role is a curious position, because it’s the only position in the world where winning the league with 20 points to spare and a ridiculous goal difference can get you sacked.

The fans, players and board of the club have eyes for only one thing – the Champions League. It is then perhaps no surprise that Conte is reportedly first choice, given how little pedigree Pochettino has in European competition.

That said, there is another aspect to being PSG’s manager nowadays – playing exciting football. The French giants have brought in an incredible amount of superstar talent and the fans expect to see the beautiful game in return. Would Antonio Conte deliver this? Probably not.

In this regard, Pochettino would be the perfect fit in Paris. Considering what the Argentine has done in North London, it’s certainly intriguing to think what he could accomplish with PSG’s resources. Could he be the man to bring them Champions League success?
