Napoli and Manchester United are interested in signing Kieran Trippier from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Spurs right-back has endured a mixed season this term but helped his side qualify for the Champions League semi-finals earlier this week.

What’s the word?

The aforementioned report claims that the Italian side, who were eliminated from the Europa League quarter-finals by Arsenal earlier this week, are already drawing up plans for next summer.

And Trippier is name-checked as a potential signing, with the club keen to recruit more depth on the flanks.

An enquiry, Di Marzio claims, has already been made.

But Napoli may face competition, bizarrely, from United, who are also said to be interested in the 28-year-old.

Antonio Valencia, of course, will leave the club this summer and United need to recruit a replacement in his stead.

Bizarre story

Trippier’s form has fallen off a cliff since the 2018 World Cup, when he played a pivotal role in helping England to the semi-finals, scoring a brilliant free-kick in the last-four clash with Croatia.

He was also on the pitch as Spurs qualified for the last four at Manchester City’s expense in the Champions League but his form this season has been mixed.

He has struggled defensively and has made a number of mistakes, including scoring a decisive own goal in the Premier League clash with Chelsea.

It makes little sense that either side would be interested in him; the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace and Leicester City’s Ricardo Pereira have been in better form and deals for them would not involve negotiating with Daniel Levy.

As it is, Spurs should snap the hand off of any bidder for Trippier – he is inherently upgradeable and Mauricio Pochettino needs fresh blood – but Napoli and United's apparent interest remains bemusing at best.
