Tottenham Hotspur have started the 2018/19 Premier League season brightly, picking up nine points from their opening four fixtures, but should be considering a move for an exciting young midfielder come the January transfer window, to add further creativity in the middle of the park.

What’s the issue?

Tottenham Hotspur became the first side in the history of the Premier League to fail to make a signing in the summer transfer window, with many Lilywhites fans concerned about the depth to their squad.

Whilst Spurs starting lineup is arguably one of the best in the top flight of English football, the somewhat lacklustre backups have the Tottenham faithful anxious.

With Harry Kane continuing to add to his goal tally, Lucas Moura finding form and Son Heung-min set to return to action following his Asian Cup victory with South Korea, the Tottenham frontline is undoubtedly strong, but the midfield has been uninspiring from the outset of this campaign, despite largely positive results.

The likes of Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are all elite midfielders, but lack tenacity going forward, making Watford’s Will Hughes a perfect mid-season signing for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Why Will Hughes?

Despite making just 15 Premier League appearances last season, Will Hughes has begun this campaign as a starter for Javi Gracia’s side.

With the ability to play in an attacking midfield role or pushed out on to the right wing, the 23-year-old has excelled for Watford thus far, in a campaign which has seen the Hornets pick up maximum points from the opening four fixtures, currently sitting joint top of the league with Liverpool and Chelsea.

Hughes, who has represented England 28 times across multiple youth levels, could provide the Tottenham side with youthful pace, creativity and an eye for goal, and would arguably be a better addition for them than Aston Villa's Jack Grealish.

Mauricio Pochettino has a strong track record when it comes to managing young English talent, and might just be able to turn Hughes from a good player to one that performs consistently at the highest level.

But, with the current form Will Hughes is in, and having joined the ranks at Vicarage Road in June 2017 on a five-year contract, it won’t be easy for Spurs to acquire the talented attacking midfielder cheaply.
