Tottenham’s FA Cup Fifth Round clash with Rochdale yesterday afternoon didn’t exactly go to plan. Fresh from a scintillating 2-2 draw with Italian champions Juventus in midweek and no longer facing the ‘leveller’ of a pitch closer resembling Camber Sands than Hyde Park, Mauricio Pochettino’s side – even in light of fielding a completely changed starting XI – should have dispensed of the League One side.

It appeared they would when substitute Harry Kane converted a late penalty won by Dele Alli, but the fact Pochettino had to bring on Tottenham’s big guns after Rochdale scored the opener, which Lucas Moura’s first strike for the north London club later cancelled out, was telling enough of how much the Premier League side had struggled against lesser opposition.

Nonetheless, supporters were still left agasp when Toby Alderweireld’s clearing header at a Rochdale corner fell into the path of Steve Davies, who was unmarked as he sealed a 2-2 draw in stoppage time with a clinical finish from close range.
