“Pochettino loves him” – Spurs in driving seat for Sessegnon

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to sign Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham this summer because he “loves him”, according to Sky Sports News reporter Lyall Thomas via the Last Word on Spurs podcast.

What’s he said?

The Fulham full-back, who is also capable of playing as a winger, has long been linked with Spurs.

The London Evening Standard reported at the beginning of the transfer window that the 19-year-old was among the club’s priority targets and Thomas, who primarily covers Spurs, has now confirmed as much.

Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, he said: “I think for the first time of all these windows, it’s one that I actually expect to get done. It’s definitely correct that he wants to join Spurs, that’s how I understand it. And because of that, I think Tottenham can be quite relaxed about it at the moment.

“People have been saying that it’s close, there have been reports elsewhere that it’s been close for ages, but it’s not close until the clubs start talking and doing a deal and, as far as I know, they haven’t started doing that yet.

“But I think everyone’s aware that Ryan wants to join Spurs, so, they can be relaxed about it. There’s obviously Man United and Juventus in the background as well but I think they know as well that Ryan wants to stay in London and go to Spurs.

“I think the conditions are there, he’s said he’s not going to sign a new contract there, he’s got one year left, Fulham have obviously been relegated, he doesn’t really fancy playing in the Championship again for obvious reasons.

“Pochettino loves him, has done for ages, I don’t think anybody’s put off by the fact he had a challenging first year in the Premier League. It’s probably been good for him, probably learned a lot from it. All the talent’s still there, he’s 19-years-old, what more do you want?”

Levy backing Poch to the hilt

This is excellent news for anyone associated with Tottenham.

It suggests that chairman Daniel Levy is listening to everything manager Pochettino wants, with Spurs looking to refresh a squad that hasn’t seen any investment since January 2018.

Lucas Moura was the last signing to arrive in north London and Sessegnon would be an even smarter investment.

This is a teenager with a remarkably high ceiling and the ability to grow and thrive under the Argentine.

Pochettino knows that and it appears that Levy does too.

Spurs fans should be delighted.
