Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has suggested Toby Alderweireld could sign a new contract to end speculation on his future, according to quotes from The Daily Express.
Spurs fans were taken on a rollercoaster ride during the summer as they saw their side fail to land a single new recruit during the close season and were forced to witness a number of their players attract plenty of speculation.
By far the biggest saga surrounded Toby Alderweireld, a reported target for Manchester United, as the Belgium international has entered the final 12 months of his deal – though Tottenham could take up an option to extend his terms by another year.
However, activating that extension would see Alderweireld have a £25m release clause in his deal, less than his £36m market value on TransferMarkt, and suggestions of a sale emerged to avoid missing out later down the line.
The end of the window has not brought an end to the saga but, while an exit could still occur, Pochettino is quoted by The Daily Express as suggesting the defender could sign a new deal.
“Look, when in England the transfer window closed and in Europe closed I think we move on.
“Then like always I told you, I never talk about situations, that maybe yes or maybe no, the club is dealing or working. In that situation it’s not my job to talk about individual situations.
“I think it’s so clear, not only in his case, in all the players that have different situations, we are so clear, the club is so clear, when something happens we are going to communicate the news as soon as possible.
“I am not going to talk about individual things. It’s not going to help anyone.”
In a time where Tottenham are battling the financial implications of moving to a new stadium, which has proven to be more expensive than initially anticipated, Spurs need to be very careful about the deals that they complete.
Alderweireld is a top-class defender and one that Tottenham, if possible, should definitely try to keep in their ranks but only if a deal can be agreed that represents a good value – otherwise, they should consider a sale in January.
Selling Alderweireld would raise significant funds for Pochettino to invest in his Tottenham squad and Spurs have players in their ranks capable of filling the void, most notably Colombia international Davinson Sanchez.
