When Jose Mourinho took charge at Tottenham last month speculation was rife as to which players would benefit from the new incumbent.

Would it be the effective but otherwise uninspiring Erik Lamela? What about Eric Dier who had for some time struggled with poor form and injuries but very much struck as a Mourinho ‘type’ of midfielder?

Few raised the possibility that in hindsight was right under our nose this whole time: that he might further improve a star that was already flourishing.

That certainly seems to be the case with Son Heung-min who was already enjoying a personally successful 2019/20 but in recent weeks has taken his game to an even higher level.

A goal, assist and a typically busy, buzzy performance away to West Ham for Mourinho’s inauguration set the tone for what was the come. Against Burnley a fortnight ago the Korean forward ran virtually the entire length of the pitch to slot away a contender for Goal of the Season.

All told the 27-year-old has scored ten goals across all competitions this season with 9 assists. He has participated in goals in 59% of his games played. He is well on track to equal or better his finest output in a Spurs shirt since his arrival to the Premier League from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

This would be some feat on its own merit but is made especially pertinent given the unfortunate incident that occurred at Goodison Park in November that saw Son collide with Everton midfielder Andre Gomes leaving him with a badly broken ankle. Whatever your thoughts on this are – and there is a legitimate argument that the media offered as much sympathy to the perpetrator as the victim – Son was clearly deeply effected in the immediate aftermath with the club concerned regarding his ‘mental well-being’.

A matter of days later the attacker scored twice in the Champions League and duly dedicated his goals to Gomes and if that was an exorcism of sorts it can now be said that his subsequent displays warrant the highest possible comparison: Is Son becoming more of an important player for Spurs than Harry Kane?

On first thought this can be easily dismissed but hang on because when asked this exact question on BT Sport, Glenn Hoddle responded thus regarding the 6 foot attacker: “I think he is. He can score, he can create, and he is a finisher.”

That is a bold claim in any circumstances. Coming from Hoddle – a long-term admirer of Kane to such an extent he is on record as saying the England international is on his way to becoming the club’s greatest ever striker - that astounds.

As for the stats they are closer than many would suspect. Son has been involved in 19 goals this season, compared to Kane's 17 from one less appearance. Son's scored or assisted on 13 different occasions, compared to Kane's 12. Son ranks first in Tottenham's squad for key passes and dribbles per game in the Premier League, Kane being seventh on both fronts, while he's only behind Kane for shots per game by a margin of 0.1.

What can be stated for certain is that as Tottenham continue to climb the table and improve, they will look to both men to take centre stage. The spotlight no longer shines just for one.
