Tottenham Hotspur should have taken a gamble on Hull City hotshot Jarrod Bowen, that's the latest claim from Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold this Deadline Day.

What's he said?

The north Londoners have been very quiet so far today, and with just an hour remaining in the transfer window, it seems rather unlikely that any deal will cross the line.

It means that Jose Mourinho won't have a new striker at his disposal with top goalscorer Harry Kane out for the foreseeable future through injury.

These developments have left Gold a little perplexed to why they didn't pursue Bowen, who appears set on a move to West Ham, per Football London.

"They scouted Bowen extensively last season and it came down to a choice between him and Jack Clarke and they went for the latter, believing he’s got more potential. Bowen has been superb since and while he’s perhaps not the most elegant player to watch, he’s very effective. The signing of Bergwijn also puts a further nail in the coffin on any potential deal. I think Bowen will be a very good Premier League player and will join the list of young British talents Spurs should have taken the gamble on."

An interesting thought

Gold raises an interesting point, although Spurs desperately need a striker, the 23-year-old is a clear source of goals and would fulfil another priority in regards to squad registration as he's English.

Bowen has netted 17 goals this season, taking his total for the past three Championship campaigns to 52 goals, per Transfermarkt. In that run he has also provided 12 assists, playing in a variety of positions across the front three, including as a centre-forward.

Their move on Jack Clarke is yet to pay dividends and if their Premier League rivals West Ham deem the forward good enough to join their senior squad, then he probably should have been available for Spurs too.
