Tottenham Hotspur are set to splash £120m on their defence this summer as Jose Mourinho plots a revamp of his squad, per The Daily Express.

What’s the word?

Spurs have had one transfer window with Mourinho in charge, signing Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven and bringing in Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica.

But the ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is said to be keen to restructure his backline when the transfer window reopens.

The Express lists a number of targets for Mourinho, with Benfica’s Ruben Dias, AFC Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake, Norwich City’s Max Aarons, Nice’s Youcef Atal, and Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell all mentioned as prospective buys.

Dias, whose agent is Jorge Mendes, has a release clause of £80m, while Ake would cost around £40m, and the report claims he is certain to leave if Bournemouth are relegated.

No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?

Dream on

There is absolutely no chance of all five players ending up at Spurs.

As the Express states, Dias has an £80m release clause, Ake has an asking price of £40m; just signing the two would eat up the reported budget.

That then ignores the possibility of signing a right-back, with Aarons and Atal linked, which is an area that is in desperate need of reinforcement. Kyle Walker-Peters, of course, was sent on loan to Southampton, while Serge Aurier is the only current right-back in the squad.

This, then, stretches credibility in a number of ways, particularly when one considers that Spurs actually need a defensive midfielder too – Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama have both struggled for minutes under Mourinho this season, with the latter making one appearance under his management and Dier not completing the 90 minutes since December – and this report is simply about reinforcing one area of the pitch.

To think that chairman Daniel Levy would sanction such an outlay while ignoring other significant areas of the pitch is laughable in the extreme.

He has a reputation for penny-pinching and, while he did buy Bergwijn in January and bring in Fernandes on loan, that hardly points to free-flowing spending in the summer.

If it’s true and Mourinho really is looking for a massive defensive reshuffle, he can dream on.

Indeed, he may have to pick one or two from the list and hope that they can be delivered; Levy, though, has previously gone through an entire summer window without buying a single player.

That surely does not bode well.
