Spurs eye loan move for former Gunners target

Tottenham want to sign midfielder Bernard on loan for the remainder of the season, according to the Express.

The Brazilian was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the summer, before eventually joining Shakhtar Donetsk for £20million.

But the agent of the former Atletico Mineiro star has been making enquiries across Europe about the interest in his client, after Bernard has failed to make much of an impression in Ukraine. And whilst Spurs have a variety of midfield options at the moment, that may change near the end of the transfer window, with Tim Sherwood reportedly ready to sell some struggling players.

Nacer Chadli and Etienne Capoue have both been linked to join Jermaine Defoe out of White Hart Lane, as the Spurs boss looks to make good use of his first transfer window in charge of the London club.

Bernard has made 10 appearances for Brazil, including in a 2-2 friendly against England last summer, but is worried his lack of impressive first team action will effect his chances of playing in a home World Cup.

Spurs are currently outside the top 4 on goal difference, but are looking to strengthen this month in a bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
