Tottenham Hotspur fans have reacted rather harshly to Gedson Fernandes’ performance against Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round.
The two sides drew 1-1 at St Mary’s, a result that will lead to a replay in north London.
Gedson, who was signed on loan from Benfica last week, started in central midfield and, while he struggled to have a real impact on the game, fans have gone over the top in calling him out for his display.
Per WhoScored, he had just 19 touches of the ball, with just seven accurate passes, though he did lay on one key pass.
The 21-year-old made one tackle and was dispossessed once but was substituted in the 56th minute, replaced by Erik Lamela.
Gedson Fernandes obviously needs time to get use to the league but worried that he doesn’t seem to know how to get involved in play, will take time to get use to the English league #THFC

No idea what Mou’s plan is here. Obvious weakness in midfield and we go for a weak link like Gedson.

Gedson non existent like much of the rest of them.

The reaction to his performance has been overly negative, but supporters are being too harsh too soon.
The 5 foot 11 midfielder had made just seven league appearances for Benfica this season prior to his move and did not really look fit enough to be in Jose Mourinho’s team on Saturday.
Of course, the FA Cup can be something of a proving ground for younger players but this was a gamble to throw Gedson in at the deep end and so it proved.
One fan, perhaps in a tongue-in-cheek manner, even asked the question as to whether Gedson had been in the team.
Gedson 6? Was he playing?

Ultimately though, he was not given much room to succeed, with Spurs also choosing to operate without a proper defensive midfielder in the game. Gedson did not have the freedom to burst forward and properly affect the game in the final third.
In that respect, Jose Mourinho did him no favours and the youngster is now paying the price with a social media backlash.
Meanwhile, one Spurs target would be a proper penalty box poacher for Mourinho’s team!
