Since his appointment as manager in 2014, Mauricio Pochettino has done a remarkable job at Spurs in terms of developing and growing the club but has yet to taste success in the league, cup or otherwise. Surely a trophy is just around the corner for the Argentine – even if he may win it for Manchester United rather than the White Hart Lane outfit.
You’d have to go back to the 07/08 season when Juande Ramos was at the helm to see when Spurs last went all the way but, as he was presented with a belated medal on Christmas Eve, Bournemouth’s Jermain Defoe was reminded of the League Cup victory which he helped his side to an astounding ten years later.
The former England international appeared in five ties before securing a move to Portsmouth one month before the Lilywhites overcame Chelsea in the final and was never rewarded for his efforts until now.
Defoe’s medal reception got Spurs fans talking, with many pining for the 36-year-old’s return – you can find the best of the reaction on Twitter below…
Love to sign @IAmJermainDefoe to help us as an extra striker this year. Fitting that someone with his affinity with the club & ability to come on and score is a part of our story this year, with the new stadium and progression in cups & the league #bringbackdefofoeinjanuary #COYS

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s criminal how he’s just a benchwarmer at @afcbournemouth ?
