Tottenham fans are hoping they can beat Arsenal to the signing of Gelson Martins, as the flying winger is set to be available for free this summer.

According to Sky Sports, Martins will join the likes of William Carvalho and Bruno Fernandes in quitting Sporting CP this summer, after a gang of thugs attacked the team at training last month.

The 23 year-old, who grabbed eight goals and eight assists last season in 31 league appearances, has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

New Gunners boss Unai Emery would love to inject some more pace into his side to compliment the creativity offered by the likes of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but could Pochettino and Spurs hijack the deal?

According to the Times, Spurs and Everton are both waiting in the wings to hijack Arsenal’s pursuit of the winger.

If Martins does indeed terminate his contract he will be available for free, and it could be a bidding war for wages, playing time, and of course the allure of Champions League football.

While Spurs are never going to be the team topping the wage offers, they are the only team in London that can offer the top tier of European football next season.

Martins would bring pace, flair and most importantly goals to the Spurs squad, and might take a little more pressure off the goalscoring exploits of Harry Kane.

At 23 the Portuguese international can only get better, and fans are absolutely loving the links. You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…
