Tottenham have completed the signing of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica on an initial 18-month loan, with an option to make the move permanent for €50m (£42.76m).

The 21-year-old will bolster the Spurs midfield yet seems to be a bit of a strange choice, as he will offer defensive cover like Eric Dier does, while sitting deep akin to Harry Winks - the pair each managing one interception per league game.

His average of one tackle per game in the Liga Nos and 2.5 tackles per game in the Champions League are evidence of that, and considering he has played only nine times this season it is interesting to see how Jose Mourinho deploys him.

His inclusion in the team could allow Spurs' more creative players like Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli have more freedom without having to cover defensively, though, and that may be one reason why many Tottenham fans are delighted to see him join.

Supporters seem to be getting carried away as this signing is a little underwhelming considering the club has been linked with Bruno Fernandes since the summer, a player who has 15 goals and 13 assists in 25 games this season.

He already seems to be the finished product, unlike Gedson Fernandes, who requires a lot of work to improve and seems to be far from ready for the Premier League, having made less than 60 career appearances.

Despite that, many amongst the Spurs faithful seem to believe in him, with suggestions that this signing can take Tottenham on to the next level, including claims that he will help the club to silverware.

Elsewhere, Spurs fans have also been reacting to some intriguing news from abroad which involves an individual who is thought of very highly by the fanbase.
