Jan Vertonghen insists that he wants to stay at Tottenham Hotspur, per the London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

Spurs have already sold Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in this transfer window and Vertonghen’s future has come under the microscope too, with his contract expiring at the end of next season.

He has yet to sign an extension to that deal – his centre-back partner, Toby Alderweireld, also has a contract that expires next summer, but his includes a £25m release clause.

Nevertheless, Vertonghen insists that he does not plan on making a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after playing a key role in the club’s run to the Champions League final in 2018/19.

He said: "I've got a year left, I will have to see what happens.

"I love being here. I feel great with the manager, he’s been supporting me and making me a better player.

"I’ve got everything I want. It’s the best club to play for at the moment."

Manna from heaven

Spurs fans needed to hear this.

It appears that he is willing to extend his stay with the club and, with Alderweireld potentially set to leave this summer, keeping Vertonghen should be a top priority.

He has served Spurs with distinction throughout his stay and is closing in on 300 appearances for the club.

A key lieutenant for Mauricio Pochettino, he made 34 appearances in all competitions in 2018/19 and Spurs would find it near impossible to find another player with his assiduousness and calmness on the ball.

He and Alderweireld have formed a world-class partnership – with them at the heart of the defence, Spurs have challenged for the Premier League title twice and almost reached the pinnacle in Europe – and they absolutely cannot lose both.

One would be painful, two would be a catastrophe.
