Jose Mourinho has got one thing completely right at Tottenham Hotspur: His treatment of Troy Parrott.

The Portuguese said earlier this week that the Republic of Ireland international, still just 17, is not yet ready to take on the burden of replacing Harry Kane in north London.

Per Football.London, he said: “I think Troy has to go through a process. Can he have minutes? Yes, he can have minutes. I'm not saying he's not able to have minutes but to put on his shoulders the responsibility of replacing somebody to be replaced, I don't think he's ready at all.”

Indeed, Parrott has played just twice for the senior side during his time with the club, once in the ill-fated EFL Cup clash with Colchester United earlier this term and then against Burnley in the Premier League, coming off the bench with his side 5-0 to the good.

To throw him in at the deep end at this point would be close to gross negligence and Mourinho’s handling of the teenager is correct.

One can point to the former Chelsea manager’s seeming unwillingness to promote youth at his previous clubs but, already at Spurs, he is showing that he has changed.

Japhet Tanganga has emerged as a breakout star already this season and is now a fixture in the club’s defence at the age of 20.

Parrott can be next but careful management is the way to nurturing a star. The injury sustained by Kane has naturally sharpened the focus on the club’s lack of options in the final third. That, in turn, has led to a suspicion that Parrott could be parachuted into the starting XI.

But biding one’s time makes sense. Parrott should be in with the first-team, training with them and learning from them. But starting him from minute one at this point would be reckless.

It is more likely that he will continue to receive cameo appearances, just like the one against Burnley.

And, really, that is no bad thing. If Parrott can prove his worth there, it will only lead to more minutes in the future. If he flops, there is nothing wrong with that either, and plans can be made to potentially loan him out and ensure he receives some proper playing time.

Right now, Mourinho is making the right call.

Meanwhile, Spurs have been handed an absolutely huge injury boost!
