Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has been made to rue the events that happened last month as transfer target Olivier Giroud, of course, found the net against the north Londoners.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard handed a rare start to the Frenchman following Michy Batshuayi's clanger on Monday against Manchester United and usual first-choice Tammy Abraham not being fit enough to start.

Giroud fired home in the 15th minute after having an initial shot saved with Ross Barkley slamming the parried effort off the post before the 33-year-old beat his fellow countryman Hugo Lloris at his near post.

Spurs looked set to land Giroud during the January transfer window as reported by The Athletic, who claimed that the Stamford Bridge outfit wouldn't block a move while The Sun stated that a fee had even been agreed between the two clubs.

His Chelsea players soon swarmed him as VAR confirmed there was no wrongdoing involved in the lead up to the goal - an image that visiting supporters may have seen in white colours had things gone very differently last month.

With Heung-min Son joining top goalscorer Harry Kane on the treatment table for the foreseeable future, Spurs must be fuming with their near-miss and in some way's it is cruel poetic justice for their failure to land a striker to bolster Mourinho's chances of success this very campaign.
