According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a move for Leeds United lynchpin Kalvin Phillips this summer, but only if they fail to gain promotion.

What's the word?

It's claimed that Spurs will join the hunt to sign the 24-year-old if the Yorkshiremen's title charge continues to stumble with Wolves and other teams also keen.

Any chances of clinching him will be void should Marcelo Bielsa guide Leeds to promotion come May.

It is also believed that Spurs see Phillips as having qualities they currently do not possess as he's a defensive anchorman with an extraordinary range of passing.

Leeds rebuffed offers of £20m in the summer before the midfielder signed a new five-year deal, but there is a clause in the contract that can be triggered thought to be just over that same fee, per a different Football Insider report.

Dier upgrade

The 5 foot 10 powerhouse would indeed offer Jose Mourinho something he currently lacks in the form of an out-and-out protector - so far this campaign he has averaged a massive 2.9 tackles a game as well as 1.3 interceptions and clearances per match too, via WhoScored.

Phillips also manages 5.5 long balls, two key passes and two crosses per game, so he's almost the perfect quarterback of sorts to marshall the link between defence and attack. He has even played at centre-back when needed.

Currently, in the Spurs squad, only Eric Dier can play in a similar role of sorts as he too has been switched between central midfield and defence at times this term.

Although his numbers are far from that of the Championship star.

The 26-year-old England international is averaging a mere 0.9 tackles, 0.5 key passes and only 1.3 long balls per game in the Premier League, as per WhoScored.

Dier is under contract until the summer of 2021, so he could potentially be entering his final year at Spurs next season, and his place in the side could quickly vanish should Daniel Levy sanction a swoop for the Leeds midfielder.

Phillips, who has been watched by England manager Gareth Southgate this season, can be the man to replace the struggling 2014 signing and it could even appease fans after their recent reactions towards him.
