Tottenham Hotspur have fallen behind Italian giants AC Milan in the race to sign Belgian star Axel Witsel, according to the Daily Express.
The Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder had been linked with a move to White Hart Lane over the summer, but a move never materialised for the Belgian international.
Now, the Milan outfit are set to capitalise with a huge swoop for the player in January, as they struggle to keep up the pace with the front runners in Serie A, despite huge investment over the summer.
Reports suggest that the 26-year old would consider a move away from Russia, having moved there in a mega money deal from Benfica in 2012.
He had previously been linked with Chelsea, who opted to sign Barcelona winger Pedro instead over the summer months.
Witsel was a number of targets Spurs missed out on during the closing stages of the window, with the likes of Victor Wanyama and Sadio Berahino remaining at Southampton and West Brom respectively.
Though Spurs are still likely to be interested in his services, it looks as if the Italian giants have stolen a march in the race for the player’s signature.
