Tottenham could reportedly still sell Toby Alderweireld to Manchester United this summer, and they must make sure any such a deal includes an immediate replacement.
According to Sky Sports reporter Paul Gilmour, Spurs “will consider offers” for Alderweireld, as well as for Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele.
The big Belgian has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United for quite some time, and with just one year left on his deal now might be the only time to cash in.
However, it is now incredibly late in the transfer window, and buying a replacement when every club in the world knows you’re one centre back down and £60m richer will be almost impossible.
This is why Tottenham must demand Victor Lindelof as part of any deal that sends Alderweireld up north, as the Swede has huge potential and just needs the right manager to coax it out of him.
When the Red Devils signed Lindelof last summer, many fans expected him to become the long-term defensive partner for Eric Bailly. The big Swedish international had an absolute nightmare on his first league start though, as Jose Mourinho’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield.
Since then, the 24 year-old has been in and out of the team for one reason or another, and his confidence is shot to bits. His showed exactly how good he is in Russia this summer though, dominating in the heart of the Sweden defence alongside Andreas Granqvist.
Lindelof is 6 ft 2, incredibly strong, and one of the best ball playing centre backs in the league. His one weakness is perhaps his pace, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem alongside the speed of Davinson Sanchez and nous of Jan Vertonghen.
Spurs fans are desperate for some world class signings and Lindelof is not world class. However, none of Alderweireld, Vertonghen or Sanchez were when they joined Tottenham either, and the big Swede could follow in their footsteps under the guidance of Pochettino.
