Tottenham Hotspur announced the signing of Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal on Wednesday morning, and his first interview was quickly published on the official club website.

Spurs confirmed the arrival of the 21-year-old until the end of the 2020/21 campaign, when there will be an option to make the move permanent, and he will wear the number 30 shirt in north London.

Tottenham are of course in their first full season in their amazing new stadium, and the young Portuguese player was clearly taken aback having encountered it for the first time.

He told tottenhamhotspur.com: "I have no words to say about the stadium. I've never seen anything like this – it's unbelievable!"

Given he has struggled for first-team football at Benfica so far in 2019/20 following injury and generally not being a starting XI regular – he has played just 630 minutes this term – it will be interesting to see where he fits in under Jose Mourinho.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 - how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Spurs certainly have their fair share of central midfield injury issues right now with Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele both absent, and perhaps there could be an early opportunity for Fernandes in that area of the pitch.

Otherwise, he may well be competing with the likes of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela in the more attacking roles in Mourinho's preferred 4-2-3-1 system, which will be no easy task.
