Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, per O Jogo.
The report claims that Manchester United were close to sealing the transfer of the Portugal international, who scored 32 goals and laid on 18 assists in all competitions last season.
However, Spurs are now said to have sent representatives to Portugal to attempt to negotiate a deal for Fernandes.
The north London club are reported to have tabled a bid worth €45m (£41m) for the player earlier in this transfer window.
However, they will now attempt to find common ground with Sporting as they look to again strengthen their squad, having already signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

Spurs have been in negotiations with Real Betis over a deal for Giovani Lo Celso this summer, per Football FanCast sources.
However, talks, which began over a month ago, have yet to reach a favourable conclusion and one feels that this deal could be a back-up to the Argentine.
Indeed, Fernandes scored double the amount of goals that Lo Celso netted in 2018/19 and would go a long way to easing the burden on Spurs striker Harry Kane.
It remains to be seen if a deal can be completed but this could well be a sign that Spurs are ready to pull the plug on their dealings with Betis, particularly if they receive a favourable answer from the Portuguese club.
Time will surely tell.
