Spurs readying summer move for wantaway £20m international star

Spurs are considering a summer move for Zenit Saint-Petersburg’s wantaway £20m-rated midfielder Axel Witsel, according to reports from The Sun.

The 27-year-old Belgium international has been plying his trade in Russia since making a big money move to the Petrovsky Stadium in 2012.

Although he’s since scooped the league title and played regular European football, Witsel has recently revealed it is his “intention to leave” the club ahead of 2016/17, and reports claim that Spurs are interested.

It’s understood that Zenit will be forced to consider offers of around £20m – considerably lower than the £30m+ they paid for him – making him an appealing option for the Lilywhites as they gear up for a season of Champions League football under Mauricio Pochettino.

Should Witsel join the Londoners, he’ll become the fifth Belgian in the senior set-up, alongside Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli.
