Spurs set to offer Champions League winner fresh challenge

Tottenham are considering a summer move to snap up Ibrahim Afellay from Barcelona on a free transfer, according to reports from Sport.

The Netherlands international was once dubbed one of European football’s top talents and played a part in the Catalan giants’ Champions League win back in 2010/11.

However, his career at the Nou Camp has been blighted with a series of injuries, while loan moves away from the club have not been enough to secure him a new permanent home or a route back into Barca’s plans.

But, Spurs are looking at the 29-year-old, who will be a free agent in just a few months’ time.

Afellay is currently on loan with Greek giants Olympiakos, but he’s expecting to be looking for a new club when the transfer window opens.

Mauricio Pochettino is thought to be willing to take a risk on the rarely-fit playmaker, who boasts a wealth of experience.

Afellay could add depth to the Londoners’ squad, with another push for a top four finish on the cards for 2015/16.

The 49-times Oranje star started his career with PSV Eindhoven before joining Barcelona in 2011.

He’s subsequently been loaned to Schalke and Olympiakos and has registered just over 20 appearances for the Catalans.
