According to Sky Sports, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, whose contract runs out in the summer, would prefer a switch to Juventus amidst interest from a number of European giants – if the Welshman does indeed swap the Emirates for the Allianz Stadium, Spurs should move for Blaise Matuidi.
Well, Sky Sports reports that, with the 28-year-old set to up sticks in July upon the expiry of his Gunners deal, Ramsey is keen on linking up with the Old Lady and can now begin negotiations with the club he wishes to join.
The former Cardiff man has spent 10 years with the north London club after joining as a teenager, making him one of the club’s longest serving current players – however he will now move on to pastures new after a tabled contract offer was surprisingly withdrawn earlier in the season.
With Ramsey reportedly set to receive an offer worth £138,000-a-week should he join Juve, one assumes that he will be a key player in Massimiliano Allegri’s plans going forward – this could be bad news for Matuidi.
A box-to-box midfielder with a lethal finishing touch – as shown by his New Years’ Day strike against Fulham – Ramsey would be a smart addition for the Old Lady to make but his arrival could mean that, with another player now vying for the coveted centre-midfield spot, there will be opportunity for Spurs to solve their defensive midfield crisis.
Mousa Dembele is rapidly waning and has sustained a string of injuries this season that have will have seen him ruled out for 82 days should he return from a knee injury on 13th January, as expected – the former Fulham man has been a key player for the Lilywhites since his arrival in 2012, but is now deemed surplus to requirements.
With a replacement surely a priority for Mauricio Pochettino and company, the north London outfit should capitalise on their rivals loss by swooping for Matuidi if Ramsey crosses the channel to Italy.
The 31-year-old Frenchman is one of the best enforcers around, with his defensive contribution and ball retention listed among his biggest strengths by WhoScored – the latter is a key feature of Dembele’s game but the Belgian has often been criticised for his lack of the former.
Needless to say, bringing in Matuidi would be a massive upgrade but, as he enters his twilight years, some may feel that there are better options. What do you think, Spurs fans? Would you like to see the World Cup winner at White Hart Lane? Let us know by voting in the poll below…
