Long time Spurs target Max Meyer looks to be heading out the door at Schalke after comments from Schalke president Clemens Tönnies.

What's the story?

Spurs have long been linked with Schalke starlet Max Meyer, and Tönnies recent comments all but confirm the 22 year-old will be looking for a new club this summer.

“I had an appointment with Max and his advisor, which was cancelled by his agent on short notice,” Tönnies told BILD.

“If someone doesn’t want to talk to me, I cannot change that.”

Meyer’s contract runs out this summer, and Spurs could face competition for his signature from Liverpool and Arsenal.

Would he fit at Spurs?

Valued at £14.4million by Transfermarkt, getting Meyer for free this summer would be a massive coup for Spurs. Not only would the move immediately upgrade their starting 11, it would leave funds available to improve other parts of the team.

Meyer started his career as a lightweight playmaker, but has blossomed into a controlling central midfielder for Schalke. The 22 year-old is averaging 1.9 interceptions and 2.7 tackles per game in the Bundesliga this season. His 89.5% pass completion is indicative of his fabulous technical ability.

The young German is just the type of player Mauricio Pochettino could turn into a star. He has all the tools to succeed, and is just waiting for the right manager and system to sharpen the edges. He would be a great fit for Spurs alongside Mousa Dembele in midfield.
