Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey, according to the Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

The report claims that Spurs have scouted the centre-back throughout the 2018-19 campaign, with the Canaries winning promotion to the Premier League.

Godfrey made his debut at the age of 17 and has gone on to make 42 first-team appearances for the club.

His performances this season, per the Mail, have impressed, with the versatile 21-year-old capable of playing at centre-back and in defensive midfield.

Spurs are keen for him to play in the latter position in north London, though they face competition from Manchester United, who are also monitoring his progress.

An England Under-20 international, Godfrey is said to be happy at Carrow Road, though a formal bid from either of his suitors could reportedly see him change his mind.

Another Dier

The parallels between Godfrey and Eric Dier are difficult to ignore.

The latter, boasting experience that the Norwich man has yet to accrue, is similarly adept at playing in midfield and in defence.

And yet the irony is that the youngster could end up being the 25-year-old’s replacement at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Dier has struggled for form in recent months and was left out of the starting XI for the Champions League final against Liverpool.

Signing Godfrey would add another obstacle to his path in north London. For manager Mauricio Pochettino that may be no bad thing, with competition sure to prove healthy.

It remains to be seen if Dier can step up.
