Tottenham Hotspur fans may have sat up and taken notice as striker target Krzysztof Piatek was among the goals for AC Milan on Wednesday evening.
The Italian club earned a comfortable 3-0 victory over SPAL in the Round of 16 of the Coppa Italia at the San Siro.
And Piatek, along with his goal, was at the centre of almost everything good about the way his side played.
Per SofaScore, he earned an 8.1 rating for his performance, the highest of any player on the pitch.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
Not only that, but Piatek also provided the assist for Samu Castillejo’s second goal, and enjoyed an excellent all-around showing.
He had five shots on goal, with two on target and one blocked, while he also completed both of the dribbles he attempted.
In total, Piatek had 39 touches of the ball, registering two key passes, while winning three of his four ground duels and five of 12 of his aerial duels.
The Poland international, who has won 10 caps for his country, was also fouled twice, while his heatmap showed that he averaged a position just past the halfway line, suggesting a willingness to drop off and link play.
Spurs have been offered the chance to sign a number of players this month and sources have confirmed that Piatek is one of them.
Milan are keen to do a permanent deal if he is going to depart and, with Harry Kane injured, one feels that a player with the 24-year-old’s pedigree would be an exceptional acquisition.
While he has struggled for goals this season – his strike against SPAL was only his fifth of the campaign – he is more than just a goalscorer, as his midweek performance proved.
It appears that he could both fill the gap left by Kane and then supplement his threat when he returns to fitness.
That cannot be a bad thing; Spurs chairman Daniel Levy should get this deal done.
Meanwhile, another club have entered the race to sign Christian Eriksen from Spurs!
