Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a potential move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

On the chalkboard

AS, via Sport Witness, has claimed that manager Jose Mourinho would see the transfer with “good eyes”, given Harry Kane’s injury and the lack of depth up front in north London.

How good would Cavani, who cost PSG £55m in 2013, be for the club if they managed to pull off a deal?

Thus far this season, the 32-year-old has scored five goals thus far this term in 14 appearances. In total, he has scored 198 goals in 293 outings for the club.

While his sample size is admittedly small – he has started four games in Ligue 1 – he has averaged 1.3 shots per game this term, 0.7 key passes, 0.2 dribbles and a passing accuracy of 80.5%, per WhoScored.

The 2018/19 season is perhaps more instructive; he scored 18 goals in 21 appearances while also registering five assists, averaging 2.5 shots per game, 0.6 key passes, 0.6 dribbles and a passing accuracy of 76.3%.

This is a penalty box poacher who could well slot right into the Spurs team.

Single-minded

Cavani is clearly out to score goals and do very little else.

He is perhaps a rare breed of modern forward in the sense that he is constantly sniffing out chances and looking to hit the back of the net.

Most centre-forwards also look to bring in other players, offloading the ball to their wingers and their runners from midfield.

Forever a Spurs legend: Honour Pochettino by getting 100% on this all-Poch quiz...

But the Uruguay international is purely predatory and Spurs could well do with that.

Without Harry Kane’s influence, they have struggled for a genuine focal point, and they need a player who can slot in and hit the back of the net from the first minute of his career.

Cavani is exactly that.

Meanwhile, Spurs have been handed some excellent injury news!
