Chris Wilder has rubbished claims that Sheffield United defender Jack O’Connell could leave the club amid links with Tottenham Hotspur, per the club’s official Twitter account.

What’s he said?

The Daily Star, who claimed that the north London club see the defender as a potential replacement for Jan Vertonghen, linked Spurs with a possible swoop for O’Connell over the weekend.

However, Wilder put paid to that speculation after his side lost 1-0 to Manchester City on Tuesday evening, insisting that he had no intention of selling anyone within his squad.

He said: “Jack’s been amazing, he’s going nowhere. Nobody’s going anywhere.

“There’s talk in the papers and I do know at times where it comes from. But we’re protected and the boys are enjoying their football.

“They don’t produce performances like tonight if they don’t want to be here.”

A strong group

Wilder has built a remarkably strong unit at Sheffield United and one has to feel that any sort of sale would put that in jeopardy.

Thus, it makes complete sense for him to rubbish the idea of anyone, particularly O’Connell, leaving.

The defender has been ever-present for the Blades in the Premier League and, while he could be seen as a shrewd acquisition for Spurs, it makes little sense for Wilder and co to let him leave without a fight.

At this point, Spurs would be better off setting their sights elsewhere; they will eventually need a Vertonghen replacement.

It is unlikely to be O’Connell, however.

Meanwhile, Spurs have been given a huge injury boost!
