Tottenham Hotspur should sell Danny Rose this month.

Reports emerged earlier this week linking Newcastle United with a possible move for the left-back, with The London Evening Standard reporting that a deal could be done before the January transfer deadline.

Rose has said previously that he intends to see out his contract at Spurs, which expires at the end of next season, but the club are said to be hopeful he will rethink that stance and move on to the Magpies.

Indeed, it really is best for everyone.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 - how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Rose has been in and out of the team this season and, while he played against Liverpool, he has not been in the squad for Spurs’ past two games, against Watford and Norwich City.

Reports over the weekend claimed that Mourinho and Rose clashed over his omission from the matchday squad for the game against the Hornets and one has to think that a clean break would do everyone the world of good.

From a purely football-based perspective, Rose is not the manager’s first-choice and Spurs have depth in their squad; Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga can both play at left-back and Ben Davies is another option, although he is currently injured. Rose will not be particularly missed.

In terms of off-field optics, too, selling Rose would save Spurs an awful lot of trouble; he is a vocal member of the squad and has done a number of tell-all interviews in recent years, including a new contract based one in The Sun. Another saw him claim that he did not want the club signing players that he “had to Google”, for example.

Quite simply, he comes across as a troublemaker in the media and his performances, when he has played, haven’t been up to snuff.

Per WhoScored, he has averaged a rating of 6.49 in the Premier League. Of players to start 10 games or more in the league, that is the lowest of any player in the squad.

Thus, sending him packing would be a major win for both Mourinho and chairman Daniel Levy.

It remains to be seen if Rose will be willing to leave but he has international prospects to think about; Euro 2020 is at the end of the season and one has to think that his chances of being included in the England squad will only diminish if he stays on the bench at Spurs.

He should consider his options but the right decision would be to move on.

Meanwhile, one Spurs image should force the club into action in the transfer market!
