Spurs unlikely to make Zaniolo swoop this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to bid for AS Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo this summer, per Corriere dello Sport.

What’s the word?

Roma have been linked with a potential swoop for Toby Alderweireld this summer and the latest Corriere report claims that the club are set to enter into negotiations with Spurs over a possible deal.

The Premier League club, meanwhile, have been credited with an interest in midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.

Nevertheless, Corriere claims that Spurs will not enquire after the signing of the 20-year-old during talks over the Belgium international.

Indeed, it is said that Spurs will not make another major investment in their midfield – they have broken the club-record transfer fee to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon – unless they sell Christian Eriksen.

A shame

Zaniolo is an excellent midfield player.

The youngster has broken through in Serie A and made a total of 36 appearances in all competitions last season.

Per Understat, he regularly plays as an attacking midfielder and averages 0.58 key passes per 90; an excellent statistic for a player in a team that does not boast anywhere near the attacking talent of Spurs.

He would have fit in under Mauricio Pochettino, where he could have become the team’s creative hub.

But, per Corriere, if Eriksen stays, he is unlikely to be packing his bags for north London.

It’s a shame for Spurs, as he could have become a star under the tutelage of the Argentine.
