Jose Mourinho has been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur’s manager after Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking.

In an appointment that has sent shockwaves throughout the Premier League, the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss met his players on Wednesday, before taking training in the afternoon.

It remains to be seen, though, how this appointment is going to pan out.

Mourinho has won trophies at every club he’s been at since Porto, without fail, while Spurs have not won a single trophy since 2008.

Could this be a marriage made in heaven, then?

Football FanCast takes a look at the players who could benefit most from the Portuguese’s hiring.

Eric Dier

This is an easy one.

Manchester United reportedly coveted Dier’s signature during Mourinho’s reign, as he often prides defensive solidity over attacking riches.

The 25-year-old has struggled to find his way into the team thus far this season, making just three Premier League appearances.

Capable of playing as a defensive midfielder and a centre-back, Mourinho could attempt to mould Dier into the anchor man that he often uses in midfield; think Claude Makelele at Chelsea and Esteban Cambiasso at Inter Milan.

He could be the biggest winner of this managerial change.

Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen is a centre-back at the age of 32 but Mourinho has worked wonders with players of his profile before.

Indeed, he signed Ricardo Carvalho for Real Madrid when his compatriot was the same age as the Belgian.

Carvalho went on to make 77 appearances for Real, while he also utilised Walter Samuel at Inter Milan. The latter turned 30 in Mourinho’s first season.

Vertonghen’s contract expires at the end of the season and it remains to be seen if he will be convinced to sign on under the new manager, but he could well enjoy something of an Indian summer in the coming months.

Dele Alli

His career was in serious danger of drifting under Pochettino.

Last season, he struggled with form and injury and scored just five league goals.

Now, of course, Alli owes the Argentine a significant debt of gratitude for his skill in developing him.

But a refresh and a new manager’s approach could see him rejuvenated.

Add in the fact Mourinho won two Premier League titles with Frank Lampard, a midfielder of very similar ilk, as the club's top scorer, and there is already a template for the new Spurs boss to mould the England international around.
