Japhet Tanganga could be a huge beneficiary of Jose Mourinho’s desire to play a youthful Tottenham Hotspur XI against Bayern Munich in the Champions League this week.

The central defender has been a key presence in the youth teams, playing 45 times for the U23s and scoring once.

He has also made 21 appearances for the U18s and 11 for the U19s in the UEFA Youth League.

Tanganga made his debut under Mauricio Pochettino earlier this season, playing 66 minutes against Colchester United in the EFL Cup.

However, the 20-year-old offers the attributes required to be a first-team player for the club.

He was included by Pochettino in his pre-season squad and played against Juventus, Manchester United, Bayern and Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup.

A physical presence with exceptional heading ability, Tanganga has been with the club since the age of 10 and has been capped at various youth levels by England.

Indeed, he was a member of the U20 squad that won the Toulon Tournament in 2017 and has also played for the Three Lions at U16, U17, U18 and U19 level.

A defender with an eye for goal, he has scored against Real’s youth team and also netted against Manchester United’s U23s in the Premier League 2.

Still a youthful presence in defence, it would be something of a baptism by fire if he were included in the XI against Bayern but it makes sense.

Reports suggest that Mourinho is prepared to send him out on loan and this is a fine opportunity for him to put himself in the shop window, particularly when it comes to Championship and League One clubs.

It is a chance he has the ability to seize.
