Tottenham look set to lose a huge player in Mousa Dembele this summer, but the latest reports suggest they could save face by getting Ivan Perisic as part of the deal.

What's the story?

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Calciomercato), Inter Milan could offer Tottenham a swap deal this summer to secure the signing of Mousa Dembele.

Both Milan clubs, Napoli and Juventus are all chasing Tottenham’s Belgian beast, so if he has a good World Cup Spurs could benefit from an all out bidding war.

Perisic has already been linked with Tottenham though, and the Italian giants will look to use that interest to win the four-way race for Dembele.

Getting Perisic as part of the deal would be an excellent way to soften the blow of losing Dembele, and the former Manchester United target might even be a better fit for Tottenham than the heavily linked Anthony Martial.

Can it transform Tottenham?

It seems like Tottenham are resigned to losing Dembele this summer. The 30 year-old is entering the last 12 months of his contract, and Daniel Levy is looking to cash in.

While it would certainly be a huge loss to Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs, getting Perisic in return could actually have fantastic knock on effects for the North Londoners.

First of all, the Croatian winger is an excellent player, and would immediately jump ahead of both Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela in the attacking pecking order.

The 29 year-old’s pace and power make him a force to be reckoned with, either from the wing or through the middle as an attacking midfielder or striker. He grabbed 11 league goals this season, matching his tally from the previous year.

He also pitched in with nine assists, although that is no surprise looking at his numbers, as the Croatian international averaged two key passes per game this season.

With 17 goals in 64 Croatia caps, Tottenham would be getting a versatile star with experience at the highest level, that could start on the wing, in midfield, or even provide the much needed cover for Harry Kane.

However, it is the effect the transfer could have elsewhere that should really appeal to Spurs fans.

If Tottenham get an instant upgrade in attack in return for a player, in Dembele, who could leave for free next summer, they will have more funds to invest in their increasingly thin midfield.

The arrival of Perisic would also mean there is no room for Anthony Martial, which would take away the one bargaining chip Manchester United have in their hunt for Toby Alderweireld, meaning the Belgian would either command an absurdly high fee or even stay put in North London.
