How Tottenham should line-up against Norwich

Tottenham returned to winning ways against Brighton on Boxing Day but the victory came as a relief more than anything else.

Another lacklustre display has seen fan discontent towards Mourinho grow, and though Harry Kane and Dele Alli came up with two good finishes to win the match, it was another stale Spurs performance.

There was a clear lack of pace and intensity throughout the team and that, combined with a lack of creativity, contributed to a mediocre attack which managed just four shots on target – the same number as Brighton had.

Norwich have the potential to trouble Mourinho’s team having beaten the likes of Manchester City, though given the Canaries have conceded 38 league goals this season and have won just one of their last 18 games it should be a chance for Spurs to show their attacking strength.

Mourinho seems to have sorted the defensive woes which hindered Mauricio Pochettino towards the end of his reign, with even Serge Aurier showing some defensive capability, but he now needs to add more flair and excitement.

He has often utilised five-at-the-back last time out but against Norwich that is a little unnecessary, and therefore he should bring another, more creative player into the mix.

With Heung-Min Son still suspended because of the red card he received against Chelsea there is a space on the left-flank which needs filling.

Christian Eriksen would ordinarily be the answer but he has started only two games under the Portuguese boss, who may instead be inclined to give Giovani Lo Celso a chance.

Unlike the Dane, the Real Betis’ loanee is definitely going to be at the club after a £34m move was agreed in the summer, and given injury has prevented him from playing as much as he would have liked, he deserves a chance now he is fit.

This match could be ideal for the playmaker too given the openness with which Norwich play, as he showed last season that he has an eye for a goal or an assist, with a combined total of 22 last term.

That could make him the perfect man to play alongside Kane and Alli, and if Spurs can keep things tight with a back four – Davinson Sanchez perhaps being the unlucky player to be dropped – then the away side should make it back-to-back wins.

Tottenham fans may think that one player doesn’t deserve to start given they were highly critical of his showing against the Seagulls.
