With the Premier League deadline already passing and the European cutoff not far away either, it's time to reflect on how English clubs have performed during the summer transfer window. Tottenham were the only team in the English game not to make a single signing this summer - in fact, they're the only team not to make a signing since the transfer window was first introduced over a decade ago - but was that the north London club's biggest mistake of the off-season?

We've posed a simple question to Football FanCast's expert writers - what will prove to be Tottenham's ultimate error of the summer transfer window? Their thoughts are shared below...

Will Jones - Lack of spending could force Pochettino exit

"Despite having made zero signings over the course of the summer’s transfer window, Spurs’ squad looks solid and has got off to a good start in the new campaign. However, the north Londoners look no closer to mounting a title challenge than they did this time last year. This lack of progress must be a source of immense frustration for Mauricio Pochettino. After all, the Argentine wanted £150million to spend this summer.

"Despite the new White Hart Lane stadium project being a factor, this ambitious manager won’t be content to stick around at a club standing still. Spurs’ failure to invest could yet cost them the services of the manager who finally made them a regular Champions League outfit."

Ben Goodwin - Failure to strengthen midfield

"Spurs’ transfer problems were blown way out of proportion, as they still have one of the most well-rounded squads in the big six, especially if they hang onto Toby Alderweireld. However, not upgrading their midfield when all of their top four rivals strengthened that department is a huge error. You cannot win the league with Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier in midfield."

Greg Potts - No Dembele successor

"Spurs’ midfield powerhouse Mousa Dembele was unhappy this summer after being denied a move to China by chairman Daniel Levy. Although this was probably the best decision for the club, Pochettino should have been allowed to sign the Belgian’s long-term replacement this summer. Bringing in a new signing to replace such an important player - who drives the Spurs team forward - is never going to be easy but in order to give that player the best chance of success they need time to settle into the squad and into Pochettino’s system.

"There’s no doubt that Tottenham have some quality young midfielders in Luke Amos and Harry Winks but they are of a different mould to Dembele. Levy will have to get his chequebook out to replace him, although the major problem is that he should have done it sooner rather than later."

Danielle Joynson - No Kane understudy

"Tottenham's failure to bring in a back-up to Harry Kane was their biggest mistake. The striker is the first name on the teamsheet for Pochettino, but a long and arduous season means that injuries and fatigue are likely. Spurs coped last season during Kane's injury absence, but in order to take that next step and be title contenders, they need a reliable goalscorer that can shoulder the responsibility when required."
