According to reports in the Daily Mail, Chelsea have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey after seeing a bid of £22m rejected.

The Blues are keen to bring the forward to Stamford Bridge having been impressed with the 20-year-old's performances this season, and the Daily Mail says the west London outfit see the Jamaica international as a potential long-term replacement for Eden Hazard.

Bailey only signed for Leverkusen during the summer transfer window following an impressive spell with Belgian side Genk, and the report adds that the Bundesliga club don't want to sell him, although they may find it difficult to turn down a significant cash offer.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have recovered from a recent disappointing run where they took just two points from a possible 12 in the Premier League to record three successive wins in all competitions, and manager Mauricio Pochettino may already be thinking about potential additions he could make to his squad in the New Year.

Spurs will want to secure a top-four finish in the top flight as well as having a real go at winning the FA Cup and beating Juventus in the knockout stages of the Champions League, and bringing Bailey to Wembley could prove to be a shrewd move.

Here are three reasons Tottenham should hijack Chelsea's bid to sign the Jamaican…

Improving their attacking options

While Tottenham have bounced back well in recent weeks following a disappointing run of form in the Premier League, you still feel that they perhaps lack that depth and quality in their squad considering they are competing in the Premier League, Champions League and the FA Cup in the second-half of the campaign.

Beyond the normal attacking trio of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli they have Fernando Llorente, Son Heung-Min and the recently returned Erik Lamela, but they don't have a great deal of options beyond that.

Signing Bailey, who is versatile and can play on either flank, would certainly go a long way to sorting that issue.

His qualities

Although Bailey initially struggled to get into the Leverkusen starting XI at the start of the season, his situation changed towards the end of September.

The 20-year-old has started nine of their last 11 Bundesliga matches, missing one because of an infection and he came on at half-time in the other and rescued a point for his side by scoring the equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Schalke.

In total, the lightning-quick Jamaica international has netted four goals and provided a further five assists in 13 German top flight games this term, while he also scored one in the DFB-Pokal.

According to WhoScored.com, he has successfully completed 21 of the 45 dribbles he has attempted in the league during the current campaign, while he has created 25 chances.

Tottenham signed Son Heung-Min from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, and not only does that mean that the relationship between the two clubs should be good, but Spurs will also be buoyed by the success of the South Korea international since he moved to England.

The 25-year-old has scored 37 goals in 110 appearances in all competitions for the north London outfit – including an impressive 21 times in 47 games last term and eight in 23 this – and Mauricio Pochettino would certainly be hopeful that in a similar environment Bailey has the ability and potential to replicate that sort of form if they can win the race for his signature.
