According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are 'resigned' to losing Toby Alderweireld to Manchester United in this summer's transfer window.

What's the word, then?

Tottenham are in a very, very tough spot when it comes to Alderweireld's future.

The 88-time Belgium international has a contract with Spurs until the summer of 2020, but a £26m release clause comes into effect at the end of the current season.

It seems impossible that the London club will be able to keep him under that arrangement, with the price mentioned hardly a huge amount when considering Alderweireld's performances over the last few seasons.

Tottenham fans have made another plea for the defender to pen a new contract, but it seems incredibly unlikely that will be the case at this stage.

According to The Mirror, Man United are the favourites ahead of Juventus and Barcelona to land the 30-year-old in this summer's transfer window.

What does it mean for Tottenham?

Well, losing a player of Alderweireld's ilk is hardly ideal. The Belgian has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League over the last few years and would leave a huge hole in their defence.

Spurs also have issues when it comes to Christian Eriksen, though, with the Denmark international seeing his contract expire next summer.

Real Madrid are believed to be keen to sign Eriksen at the end of the season and if both the 27-year-old and Alderweireld were to leave then Tottenham would feel it.

For now, the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli appear happy, but there might well become a point when the pair question whether Tottenham really have what it takes to become serious challengers for the major trophies on a consistent basis.

Spurs are not exactly huge spenders, meanwhile, and it could be a very tough window for the club if they lose two key players without a serious plan to replace them.
