Tottenham are in the hunt for Sunderland talent Josh Maja after his impressive displays this season, according to The Mirror.

What's the word?

Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham face a stern test this season amidst a transitional period as they await a move to their new stadium and could be hit with financial worries, which is why the Argentine boss is keen to strengthen his squad's depth in January.

A backup option to Harry Kane is a priority for Spurs heading into 2019, with Fernando Llorente way off the pace, and The Mirror has named Tottenham amongst the clubs eyeing a move for Sunderland sensation Josh Maja.

The 19-year-old has also courted the attention of Southampton and Manchester City following his fine performances in League One this season, where he has scored nine goals in 12 matches for the Black Cats.

A good addition?

Pochettino's well-established record of getting the best out of young talents accompanied by Maja's form this season is a recipe for success, as the teenage starlet could be developed into the ideal back-up option for Kane.

However, the questions will be whether he can replicate his fine form from the third-tier of English football in the Premier League and such a significant jump could derail the striker's development - so it might be wise to seek a Dele Alli-like transfer with Sunderland.

Back in February 2015, Tottenham signed Alli from League One side MK Dons and then loaned him back to the club until the end of the season, before developing into a fine asset for Pochettino's side in the following campaign.

Additionally, any deal would surely be a huge blow for 16-year-old Spurs starlet Troy Parrott, who is exciting many people at the north London outfit right now.
