The Argentinian ace became Spurs’ most expensive signing over the summer after completing a £30m switch to White Hart Lane from Roma.
Despite having quite the reputation – with some having compared him to Lionel Messi earlier in his career – the 21-year-old has struggled during the opening period of his time in London.
Andros Townsend is currently one of a number of players keeping the youngster out of AVB’s starting XI, and the Portuguese coach, although sympathetic towards Lamela’s situation, says that he needs to get better if he is to be a key man at the club.
“[Roberto] Soldado had some knowledge of the language before [he came] so it was a little bit easier for him.
“With Erik it was a little bit more difficult but we have given him massive, massive help and his family arrived this week.
“He knows he isn’t producing half of what he can produce but he understands the situation now is that he has to compete for his place.”
Lamela is likely to be given a chance to prove his worth on Wednesday night when Spurs take on Hull in the Capital One Cup.
