Spurs are understood to have seen off interest from Serie A giants Roma and AC Milan, and have had their improved offer of £7million accepted for the 23-year-old.
Chiriches will replace Steven Caulker at White Hart Lane, who the club recently sold to Cardiff City for £8million.
The move looked as though it had collapsed last night, following an incredible outburst from Steau’s controversial owner Gigi Becali, who angrily claimed Tottenham were trying to rush the deal.
Becali is a controversial politician and businessman, who was jailed for three years in May for abusing the country’s land exchange system.
Becali is reportedly said to have called Steaua’s general manager and questioned: “Who are Tottenham? Why can’t they wait? Don’t do the transfer! I’m not selling! I am Gigi Becali!”
But despite this outburst, Chiriches’ agent claims a fee has been agreed and it is now down to the player agreeing personal terms and completing a medical at White Hart Lane.
“[Roma] have not raised their offer of £5.7m. Tottenham, however, are now up to £7m and have taken the player,” he said.
“It is at 99 per cent certain – it only lacks the signature of the boy, who will arrive soon.”
