Serge Aurier wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per The Times.

What’s the word?

The Ivory Coast international has yet to play for the club in 2019/20, though he was on the bench for the opener against Aston Villa.

Instead, manager Mauricio Pochettino has opted to play Kyle Walker-Peters in both fixtures following the sale of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in the summer.

And the report claims that Aurier is keen to play regularly and, as such, is seeking a move away from the club prior to the European transfer deadline.

The Times reports that he could either move to a Serie A club or make a return to Ligue 1, having previously played for French champions PSG.

A poor defender

Aurier has never really been good enough for Spurs.

Per WhoScored, in 2018/19, the Ivory Coast international made eight appearances in total and made 2.1 fouls per game. By comparison, he made 2.5 tackles, so let’s assume that just 0.4 of those were successful.

Poor in the attacking third too, Aurier has made a total of six assists for Spurs in 36 appearances.

With Walker-Peters seeming to grab his chance with both hands at right-back, it makes little sense to keep Aurier around.

Granting him his wish and selling him this summer, then, would alleviate a major problem for Spurs.
