According to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Newcastle United centre-back Jamaal Lascelles in this summer’s transfer window.
If reports are to be believed, Lascelles is currently not short of interest, with Everton the latest team to be linked with a swoop for the centre-back.
West Ham United and Chelsea are also said to be interested in the Magpies captain, who can count himself extremely unfortunate to have missed out on a spot in the England squad for the 2018 World Cup when considering his impressive form last season.
According to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham are ready to battle the likes of Chelsea for the 24-year-old as head coach Mauricio Pochettino looks to improve his defence.
Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez are currently Spurs’ first-choice centre-backs, but Toby Alderweireld is expected to leave this summer, and Lascelles may well be seen as an ideal replacement for the Belgium international.
We are in an age where there is a lack of quality centre-backs, especially ones that have experience of playing in the Premier League.
Lascelles moved to Newcastle from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2015, and he has made 103 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions – scoring eight times in the process.
Last term, the defender scored three times in 35 appearances in all competitions, and was outstanding in the final months of the campaign as Newcastle pulled clear of the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Lascelles, who stands at 6ft 2in, has more than proved his worth at this level of football.
Tottenham could decide look abroad to replace Alderweireld, but the answer might well be right in front of them, even if Newcastle’s reported asking price of £45m is a touch steep.
